From Rich Leon:
Back in the mid 1980’s our local Sierra Club was getting a lot of calls from people looking for places to go hiking. At the time I was the local membership chair so most of the calls came my way.
It was brought up at one of our Executive Committee meetings to put together a list of areas we could give to people who wanted to go hiking. That led us to put together a trail guide.
Easy, Bea Lackaff. and I would meet at the home of Paula Whitson, who at the time was the local chairperson. The four of us put together trail guide number one. That publication did so well the first year we decieded to do a second guide.
Over the past nearly 20 years the guides have been revised numerous times. This year the guides were completely updated along with adding new trails and new color front covers. A North Idaho was also published. It has 25 trails from St. Maries to Bonners Ferry with a front cover photo of Roman Nose lake near Sandpoint.
We have now sold about 8,000 copies of the trail guides.
